General information, for your, uh... information? Okay? Okay.
Game Info
Gotham City is a place with problems: an increasingly dissatisfied working class facing less and less work while millionaire playboys toy with the economy; a crime lord with a stranglehold on local politics; several costumed people going around committing and foiling high-profile crimes; an abusive psychiatric institution housing a number of political prisoners; a DA with... issues... the fact is, it's not a great place to live. The city passed it's industrial boom in the twenties and is now in desperate need of help - not in the form of costumed vigilantes, but from dedicated citizens, civil servants, activists, anyone with the motivation and drive to help make their home a better place to be.
Gotham Home Companion - described by it's creators as something along the lines of a cross between Gotham Central and The Wire - is a game that focuses on the workings of city institutions in Gotham, and the relationships of citizens to the city as a whole.
Guidelines and general rules
At Gotham Home Companion, we are primarily interested in following the everyday lives of ordinary - or sort of ordinary - people. While ordinary is certainly subjective, we have a "tread lightly" rule when it comes to costumed heroes and villains as PCs. If you feel you have a unique take on a major Batman character, by all means bring it up - but don't come here expecting to be able to pick up the dark knight himself. Cops, lawyers, activists, politicians, teachers, doctors, nurses and mental health workers, social workers - anyone with an interest in or connection to a local institution is mainly who we're interested in seeing. We welcome original characters, characters based on silly one-off comics or animated movies, etc.
Beyond that, general RP etiquette applies. Respect peoples' boundaries, be open about what you're comfortable with, don't confuse in character with out of character, don't godmode, and we'll all get along fine. We don't have a bunch of specific rules, because we feel that this should be fairly self-evident - none of us are particularly rigid when it comes to rules of engagement, but common sense should be used. That being said, we do have two rules that may not be self-evident, but are still non-negotiable:
1. No scenes with sexual assault. The people who run this game are just not into that; there are lots of other games that allow it, and they're fine games, we're just not one of them, so don't ask.
2. Scenes containing material other than sexual assault that may be triggering - excessive violence, explicit examples of sexism, racism, cissexism, etc, representations of common phobias - MUST contain a warning in the body of the main post to that effect, and any triggering content in the body of the main post MUST be placed behind a cut.
These rules are not about judging what people want kind of scenes people want to do; we consider them a matter of accessibility. Failure to comply with them - and failure to comply with any/all of the guidelines above - may result in you not being welcome in our game anymore, and that would make us sad.
As far as DCU canon goes, obviously this is a bit of an AU game; we don't follow canon so much as we write things that are inspired by and incorporate tasty bits of it. Putting your own spin on things is the ultimate point of the game, and we encourage people to have as much fun with that as possible, within the larger concept of the game.
We generally play by writing in the third-person present tense. For samples of our gameplay, check out our main community.
